Importance for Prelims
Current Affairs is one of the most important aspects of GS Foundation preparation for the UPSC Prelims. The Prelims exam includes a dedicated paper (General Studies Paper-I) where Current Affairs features prominently, especially in the sections related to Indian Polity, Economics, Environment, Science & Technology, and International Relations. Keeping up-to-date with daily national and international events, government policies, and socio-economic issues is crucial for performing well in the Prelims. A robust understanding of current affairs will help candidates answer questions with precision and relevance, which is key to clearing the Prelims cut-off.
Importance for Mains
In the Mains exam, Current Affairs takes on even greater significance. Specially GS Paper II, and Paper III require an in-depth understanding of contemporary issues. The ability to critically analyze issues, suggest solutions, and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations is tested extensively. This is possible only after having a thorough grasp over current affairs.
Importance for Interview (Personality Test)
Current Affairs plays a significant role in the UPSC Interview, or Personality Test, as well. The interview panel often discusses current issues with the candidate to gauge their awareness, critical thinking, and personality traits. A candidate’s ability to provide thoughtful insights and well-rounded opinions on current affairs can positively impact their performance in the interview.
